The Therapy of Music

When I was growing up I sang a lot of songs and I loved it. When I was 19 yrs of age I joined a singing group in my church and that’s where I developed the singing skill. This was followed up by the desire for me to belong to a group that’s soul desire was to sing. Finally a group was born “Adawnage” with this group I have been fortunate to meet influential people in the Kenyan who have changed my life in one way or another.
My sister got pregnant and after 9 months my 1st Nephew “Bradley” was born. He use to cry a lot; however every time we would put music he would start dancing and finally sleep. This is when my curiosity began …. Can music be used for other reasons?
According to “Music therapy perspectives” the book explains how to include useful information to music therapists, music therapy students, and professionals interested in the therapeutic uses of music. It also tries to address ethical concepts and issues as they pertain to music therapy education, training, research and professional practice. (http://www.musictherapy.org/research/pubs/)

While music has long been recognized as an effective form of therapy to provide an outlet for emotions, the notion of using song, sound frequencies and rhythm to treat physical ailments is a relatively new domain, says psychologist Daniel J. Levitin, PhD, who studies the neuroscience of music at McGill University in Montreal. A wealth of new studies is touting the benefits of music on mental and physical health. For example, in a meta-analysis of 400 studies, Levitin and his postgraduate research fellow, Mona Lisa Chanda, PhD, found that music improves the body's immune system function and reduces stress. Listening to music was also found to be more effective than prescription drugs in reducing anxiety before surgery (Trends in Cognitive Sciences, April, 2013).
Finally I am still learning a lot in regards to music and so far I know that music is one way that can give you a reason to want to live tomorrow. Music has also changed culture and the way young people are relating.
